Mel Gibson will begin shooting the long-awaited sequel to his 2004 blockbuster The Passion of the Christ this year.
Film journalist Jordan Ruimi reported that Mel Gibson will finally start filming the sequel to "The Passion of the Christ" in a few months.
"A late spring shoot is now being discussed, with James Kiewizel returning to play the role Jesus," Ruimi wrote on his WorldofReel.com blog, with the film slated for a 2024 release, according to IMBD.com.
The Passion of the Christ remains the highest-grossing Christian-themed film of all time.It tells the story of the final hours of Jesus' life before his crucifixion.
“The sequel has been in the works for nearly a decade. Gibson is hard at work on the script with Bravehearts screenwriter Randall Wallace. "Resurrection" will present the events that took place during the three days between Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection," Ruimi wrote.
It should be noted that the film "The Passion of the Christ" received an "Oscar" in three nominations: for cinematography, original music and make-up, as well as an "R" rating for graphic depiction of violent scenes.
Gibson said that the 2004 film was a spiritual experience for him, and that he felt God was guiding him while making the film.
